Have you ever looked at yourself and wondered why you’re still struggling with something you thought you would have overcome by now?
Spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. But along the way, discouragement can make us lose sight of how far we’ve come and tempt us to give up on the growth God is working to produce in us.
The Danger of Discouragement
One of the greatest challenges we face in our spiritual growth is discouragement. We want to change quickly, overcome our weaknesses, and become better versions of ourselves. But growth often takes longer than we expect.
When we repeatedly struggle with the same weaknesses or fall into familiar patterns of behavior, frustration can set in.
The danger is that discouragement, left unchecked, can take the fight out of us. It can weaken our faith, diminish our desire to keep pursuing God, and eventually cause us to stop trying.
We can begin to question whether God is working in our lives at all.
But our inability to see immediate progress doesn’t mean God has stopped working.
Even Gideon Experienced Discouragement
In Judges 6, we meet Gideon, a man who was struggling with the circumstances surrounding Israel. When God called him to deliver His people, Gideon questioned where God had been and why He had allowed their suffering.
Gideon couldn’t see what God was doing.
Yet God was working, and He had a purpose for Gideon.
His story reminds us that even people of great faith can experience discouragement. What matters is how we respond when it comes.
Keep Pressing Toward the Goal
In Philippians 3:12–14, Paul acknowledges that he hasn’t arrived. Instead, he presses forward toward the goal.
That’s an important perspective for our own growth.
We must stop measuring spiritual growth exclusively by how quickly we eliminate our weaknesses. Instead, we should recognize our willingness to acknowledge where we need to grow, address those areas, and continue moving forward.
Psalm 1 reminds us of the importance of God’s Word in our daily lives. Just as our bodies need nourishment, our spiritual lives need consistent nourishment through Scripture and our relationship with God.
Remember, don’t become so discouraged by the person you haven’t become that you fail to appreciate the growth that has already taken place.
God is at work. Keep walking with Him, keep growing, and keep pressing forward.
Becoming more like Christ is a journey worth pursuing every single day.
