“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. – 1st Timothy 4:14

In context, the Lord through Paul is encouraging and exhorting a young Timothy to be an example to the believers. To continue the work of the ministry, and not to allow his young age to deter him from being the minister he should be.

However, this verse of scripture provides great advice for everyone of all ages.

As believers in Jesus Christ we are to be an example to the believers. Example to the body of Christ and beyond. Examples into our community, and our circle of influence. Paul the apostle would say, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ” in 1 Corinthians 11:1, and Jesus of course invites us all to “Imitate Him” as we live out our daily lives.

The exhortation is for you and me to live a life where people can see, hear, and learn about Jesus. Can people watch you or me and see Jesus? It’s a soul searching question. Consider for a moment your conduct? Think about the words that come out of your mouth, examine for a moment the purity of your life, is your faith demonstrated for all to see, and your love and spirit are you touching the hearts and lives of those within your influence and reach?

I understand the context of the encouragement and exhortation to young Timothy. But I trust that you can see how applicable this word is for every single believer no matter our age. And how inspiring and convicting this exhortation may be.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit help us to open up our entire lives to you, that we may live to imitate Jesus and be a living example for all those we come in contact with. – AMEN
